Not exactly how I planned it

Not the best of weekends for me I would say. Though we placed second in both tournaments, I felt like both finals matches could’ve gone to either side. On Saturday, at the NVL/Rox tournament we were undefeated all day in 18u. Though our first match of the day was rough (it always is), we won and ended up coming out first in our pool. However, our winning streak ended in the finals. We were playing against Francesca/Alexa from 692.  I didn’t know them personally but had heard that they were really good.  For the entire match it was back and forth. One team would go on a run, just to have the other team come back and go on a run of their own. In the end, we lost with a final score of 20-18. Though I was disappointed at the outcome, I felt that Sami and I had played our hearts out and this time it just didn’t end in our favor. Though we lost, it was also an amazing opportunity to have many college coaches watching us through the entire day.

My tournament on Sunday mirrors Saturday almost exactly. This time we were back in Austin for the USAV Junior Beach Qualifier.  Today I am playing with Daria in the 16u. We were undefeated in our pool of 7, though we did have a close match to close out pool (23-21). Our road to the finals was fairly easy and we didn’t have another close game until the finals, a rematch from the team we almost lost to in pool (Maja/Carly). By the end of the day my jump serves were on point. The first four points of the finals match were aces off of my serve. At one point we were up 15-9, and then it just fell apart. I don’t think necessarily that we let up because we thought we had an easy win at that point, I think the other team just kicked their butts into gear. At 17-17 we took a time out, but it didn’t help much. They continued to serve my partner and I went up to option and got blocked. I definitely think that was the turning point of that game. In the end we lost 21-19 and it still makes me sick to my stomach to think about it. Overall I wasn’t disappointed in my play so much, but more in my ability to finish. You should never let up, no matter if you’re ahead 15-0 or 15-9. It’s always terrible to lose such close games, but I know that these losses will only motivate me further and make me work harder, so I know the next time it’s neck and neck, my team will come out on top.

Big Weekend Ahead

This weekend I’m playing in two tournaments, an NVL/Rox Qualifier (18u) in Dallas on Saturday and a USAV Qualifier (16u) in Austin on Sunday. I’m really excited for the Saturday tournament because there is a lot of good teams from Dallas playing in it and there will be a lot of college coaches present. I hope we do well, not only to impress the college coaches, but also because this is the only tournament I have yet to qualify for. On Sunday I know there will be a lot of teams, but I don’t think it will near as competitive as Saturday. Don’t get me wrong, it will still be a tough tournament. They’re giving out 5 bids (that’s a lot)!  I would hope that we would finish top 5 but you never know what can happen on any given Sunday (you like how I slipped that in  🙂   Overall I know this weekend will be fun, no matter the outcome.  I’m on the sand — what could be better!

I could see myself as a Tiger…

This past week was so fun!!  Not only did I feel like I improved, but I had fun doing it. All of the coaches were really cool and we didn’t do a long warm up – yea! Every day we worked on different skills and at the end we played queens. On the last day, my partner for the tournament was Kenzie, a girl I practice with at Tim’s. We came out first in pool, but sadly we lost in the quarters. Though it was disappointing to lose so early I enjoyed every second of it. I made a lot of new friends from all over the country and I got to improve my skills. It’s always nice to get a new prospective on things.  You don’t have to change every thing you do just because one coach say to do it that way, but you never know, it might just work for you!  This was definitely one of the best camps that I’ve been to so far and I can’t wait to go back next year.

Look out LSU…here I come!

Well I just just finished playing in the USAV Junior Beach Qualifier in Houston.  We got 1st!!  I am now on a 4 hour car ride to Baton Rouge, LA to go to a 3-day LSU Beach Volleyball Camp. I’m excited to go, but also a little nervous because I don’t know what to expect. Hopefully we don’t do a long warm up because I expect Louisiana to be super humid and I’ll probably be sweating within the first minute. This week I want to focus on my setting, as well as work on serve receive. I’m also excited for the tournament on the last day.  This will be a great opprotunity for me to see where I stack up against players from other states.
